Revolving around the theme of HOME , the Taste of Home through home cooked food – the children surprising their mother with a home cooked dinner.
Through the interviews with the profiles, we get to know more their background and struggles they face on a daily basis.
For this instance, we are looking at our profiles from two different perspectives. As an audience, we starts off as an outsider, slowly getting to know them from another person’s point of view. As the video progress, the profile’s character will shine through very natural from the genuine moments when the camera interacts with them for the first time.
For a surprise video to work, the research and communication is extremely important.
I had a long conversation with Mdm Salina to understand more about her background. I needed to find out about her struggles, hopes and dreams for herself and her children. Little details are equally important too, such as what makes her happy? How often does she spend time with her kids? When is her birthday? Her kids birthday?
Next, we need an accomplice. For this project, I rope in Mdm Salina’s mother. Some of the key Information includes Mdm Salina’s favourite dish, her working hours, specific time she comes home, her routine behaviours, her likes and dislikes.
The accomplice not only needs to trust the director, she must not let the cat out of the bag too early before the actual filming. White lies are inevitable in the process of the project.
The kids are the protagonist for the project. They will be taking the active role to drive the plot forward.
There are no better ways to know kids than spending quality time with them. Bribing them with toys is the easy way but it’s only temporarily. So I arranged with their grandmother and visited the kids. I bought them a board game set where I bonded with them. Kids are very innocent and genuine, they might accidentally reveal the secret planning to their mother. Hence I had to hold on to the secret of surprising their mother till the actual day of shoot.
Trust is the most important factor here while communicating to Mdm Salina and her families. Regular text messages and calls to give them updates helps to provide assurance.
